2025 Winter Programs Will be Announced This Fall!

Check back this Fall for 2025 Winter programs. Below are examples of last years programs:

Avalanche and Snow Science in the Whites

High School Age

Do you love to ski, snowboard, traverse terrane untravelled? Here is your chance to travel to the White Mountains, become immersed in the world of snow, and to learn how to adventure safely, from experts in the field.

Join IFMGA/AMGA Mountain Guides and Dick Chasse (Acadia Mountain Guides Senior Guide) for a weekend of avalanche education and winter camping basics. This course provides an introductory understanding of avalanche activity and will be predominantly field-based after an interactive classroom session on Saturday morning.

Saturday afternoon will be outside focusing on understanding snow layers and companion rescue skills. After a full day of avalanche skills, we will then focus on some of the essential camping skills in a winter environment. After a night in our tents and sleeping bags and a hearty breakfast we will head up onto the slopes of Mount Washington for a ski tour and avalanche field day. This experience is designed for confident skiers/boarders.

Participants should have alpine touring skis or a split board and appropriate footwear. Winter sleeping bags and skins can be borrowed if needed.  All other camping, safety gear and food is provided and included in the fee. We will schedule a gear-check prior to the trip to ensure participant’s comfort and safety.

Transport will be provided!

February Break’s Wintery Mix

Middle School Age

Join MSO guides for four sessions of outdoor adventure during February Break. Flexibility is so crucial for our changing world and the activities will flex based on temperature, snow and conditions in the field. Winter skills might include snow shoeing, ice skating, cross country skiing and/or ice fishing. The schedule will be determined at the beginning of the week and all equipment will be supplied.

Guides are well-versed in winter ecology, birding and animal tracking and will share their knowledge daily as well as teach skills necessary for winter survival, shelter building and fire-making.

All of the above will be infused with team building initiatives, trust activities, group games and reflection. Small group sizes allow for great group bonding and getting out and active regardless of the weather helps keep middle schoolers regulated and energized during the colder months. This has been a favorite course, so be sure to sign up early.
