WINTER 2019 EXPEDITIONS

SunDog Outdoor Expeditions offers expedition-oriented after school programs for MidCoast Maine 5th-8th graders, focused on character development, environmental awareness, & technical skill development.

Each course meets twice a week for 6 weeks to train & prepare.

After 12 sessions, students put their skills to the test on a 2-day Final Expedition!

   FAT TIRE BIKING

FAT TIRE BIKING

WINTER ON WHEELS! (5th & 6th grade)

6 weeks of FAT TIRE BIKING & Winter Skills, a service experience, and a multi-day expedition. Have you every ridden a Fat Bike? It’s a whole different experience from regular biking! Fat Bikes have greater surface area on the tires, making the riding experience more fun, more safe, and more enjoyable. There is nothing better than the sound of a fat tire on crunchy snow! Fly through the woods on trails and experience winter at it’s best. Stop for hot chocolate and snacks to fuel up, and learn the wonders of Fat Biking in the Camden Hills. We’ll get out there and find adventure, build snow structures, build pulk sleds for the expedition, learn winter camping skills while we explore MidCoast’s best bike trails in the quiet, crisp, cool season of the winter.

   ALPINE TOURING & SPLIT BOARDING

ALPINE TOURING & SPLIT BOARDING

EARN YOUR TURNS! (7th & 8th grade)

6 weeks of Alpine Ski Touring & Split Boarding, plus a service experience, and a multi-day expedition. Includes building sleds for expedition touring. Some skiing or snowboarding experience is necessary. Alpine Touring or “Randonnée” is a type of skiing that allows skiers to ascend the mountain under their own power using specialized bindings and climbing skins. Alpine Touring is skiing in the backcountry. For this course we will be skiing at the Camden Snow Bowl on Mondays & Tuesdays when the lifts are closed. With special “skins” that are applied to the bottom of the ski (or split board) the students will be able to “skin” their way up the mountain! A Splitboard is a snowboard that can be separated into two ski-like parts used with climbing skins to ascend slopes the same way alpine touring or telemark skis are used. The two halves can then be connected to form a regular snowboard for descent. Ski Touring and Split Boarding are such great life-long skills to have living in the MidCoast where the mountains meet the sea!
